Minoxidil

Commonly known under the brand name Rogaine ®, Minoxidil is a topical medication available over-the-counter. It can be used by both men and women and should be applied on thinning areas of the scalp once to twice daily. Minoxidil acts as a vasodilator and increases blood flow to your hair follicles. When used on a long-term basis, Minoxidil was shown to slow down the progression of hair thinning and/or loss and can also contribute to the re-growth of miniaturizing hairs.

Finasteride

Commonly known under the brand name of Propecia ®, Finasteride is an oral medication for men available by prescription only. Studies have shown that its long-term use slows down the progression of hair loss and/or thinning and can also contribute to the re-growth of miniaturizing hairs. Finasteride acts by blocking the transformation of testosterone in dihydrotestosterone (DHT); the active molecule that binds to sensitive hair follicles causing hair thinning and balding.

Although rare, side effects have been reported with the use of finasteride and/or minoxidil. They can also interact with other medications or illnesses. It is important to consult your hair physician doctor before starting any type of medication.
